Step Inside With: Kellie Lutito

Kellie Lutito is a beautiful new mom who welcomed us into her gorgeous home with a delicious potato zucchini frittata (find the recipe on her blog here). Kellie works for Blood:Water Mission, an organization that empowers communities to work together against the HIV/AIDS and water crises in Africa. She's the wife to a ridiculously talented musician who's latest project, Leagues, is both fun and catchy. Precious little Isla came into their lives about four months ago and couldn't be any sweeter. Without further adieu, take a peek inside her life!

How would you describe your personal style?
I would say it’s flea market finds mixed with comfortable modern. I love finding old things with a story that give the house a nostalgic feel, but we also have pieces that are just plain comfortable. It’s important to me to have a comfortable, inviting home that feels lived in.

What are your most treasured pieces in your home or closet?
My most treasured piece in my closet is this red dress! I just love the 1950s feel of it and the color. It was a thrifted find by a friend who altered its shape and gave it life again. It makes me feel good every time I wear it, and what girl doesn’t need that every now and then?

I’d say my favorite piece in my house is the vintage chandelier in my daughter Isla’s nursery. It was given to me by a dear friend and is just perfectly lovely in her room.

What do you love most about living in East Nashville?
Probably the old historic homes. They have so much character! Our home was built in 1926 and while an old house definitely has its flaws, I love that it has had so much life. How many little feet have run down this hall? How many meals have been eaten in this dining room?

How do you foster creativity in your life?
I love getting inspiration from old things and finding new ways to repurpose them. My succulent gardens are planted in old drawers found at the flea market. For the bathroom, I made some light fixtures out of old mason jars and a mirror frame from barn wood. And of course there is the ever-present urge to paint a piece of furniture! When I’m feeling a bit parched creatively, I just decide to paint something!

How do you balance being a new mom and having a full-time job?
Well, I’m really new at it so I’m learning, but the answer to that question is coffee and wine. Ha! Ok, but seriously, I won’t lie and say it isn’t challenging, especially with a musician husband that travels often! My biggest decision in the morning used to be, “Should I wash my hair this morning?” Now my days look a little different, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love my job at Blood:Water Mission and I love my job as a mommy! My time away from her just makes my time with her that much sweeter.
